چکیده

The disposal of sulfide mine tailings in an environmentally sound, yet cost-effective, manner is an issue facing most metal mines. Subaqueous tailing disposal is considered an attractive option for disposal that limits oxygen (O2) availability within sulfide mine tailings and controlling sulfide oxidation and the resultant acid mine drainage (AMD). Assuming that O2 profiles represent steady-state conditions, we aim to evaluate the depth-dependent and temperature-dependent rates of O2 consumption in saturated mine tailings. Measurements include microscale O2 gradients and diffusivity profiles within columns representing undisturbed mine tailing profiles from an impoundment near Nanisivik Mine in northern Canada. Measurements were made across the diffusive boundary layer (DBL) above the tailing-water interface as well as in the tailings below. Laboratory measurements of O2 profiles are compared to in situ profiles. From the laboratory results it is possible to evaluate the O2 flux across the DBL and the depth-integrated O2 uptake. The results are compared with the average sulfate production rate over 3 months. O2 uptake in saturated tailings is discussed in relation to O2 uptake measured in columns after free drainage. The methods applied provide consistent O2 consumption rates as well as reliable predictions for controlling AMD by keeping tailings under water. Copyright © 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd

Changes of sulphide oxidation rates over time in mine tailings , Laver , Northern Sweden

Pyrrhotite-bearing tailings were deposited in an impoundment at the Copper mine at Laver in Northern Sweden 1936-1946. Sulphide oxidation has released acidity and metals to the recipient since deposition. Sampling of surface water was performed in a brook draining the tailings impoundment in 1993, 2001 and 2004-05. The dissolved concentration of sulphide associated elements such as Cu, S and Zn...

Sulfide consumption by mussel gill mitochondria is not strictly tied to oxygen reduction: measurements using a novel polarographic sulfide sensor.

Some organisms that survive in environments rich in hydrogen sulfide possess specific metabolic pathways for sulfide oxidation and subsequent use of reducing equivalents in oxidative phosphorylation, a process called chemolithoheterotrophy. This process is dependent on ambient oxygen partial pressure and environmental sulfide exposure. To define accurately the kinetics of sulfide metabolism and...

Enumeration of Thiobacilli within pH-Neutral and Acidic Mine Tailings and Their Role in the Development of Secondary Mineral Soil.

The Lemoine tailings of Chibougamau, Quebec, Canada, were deposited as a pH-neutral mineral conglomerate consisting of aluminum-silicates, iron-aluminum-silicates, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. These tailings are colonized by an active population of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which is localized to an acid zone occupying 40% of the tailings' surface. This population peaked at 7 x 10 most ...

Coal Recycling from Tailings using Flotation with 2-Level Experimental Design Techniques

In this study, the possibility of producing coal with less than 11% ash from tailings of flotation process was investigated. The effect of six flotation parameters: collector type, collector consumption, frother type, frother consumption, pulp density and mixing rate were studied on a sample from a tailing dam. A software based experimental design approach (DX7) was applied to determine and mod...
